During a session in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, the government disclosed its plans to introduce ‘Bahu Balli’ bamboo fencing along expressways and national highways. To initiate this innovative project, a pilot program will be launched in Chhattisgarh.

On Wednesday, during the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the Road Transport and Highways Minister revealed the government’s plan to implement ‘Bahu Balli’ bamboo fencing on expressways and national highways. As an eco-friendly alternative to steel fencing, the pilot project for this initiative will commence in Chhattisgarh. The move aims to promote sustainable practices while ensuring effective infrastructure development, as stated by the Minister in response to supplementary questions.

In an effort to bolster the rural economy and improve the livelihoods of villagers and tribals, Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport and Highways Minister, expressed that the installation of ‘Bahu Balli’ bamboo fencing would play a pivotal role. This pioneering bamboo fencing, which is both environmentally friendly and sustainable, is being introduced for the first time, with successful trials and necessary clearances already completed. Gadkari enthusiastically shared, “We are moving away from steel and embracing bamboo barriers.” He further announced the launch of a pilot project in Chhattisgarh, and if proven successful, bamboo will be adopted as a substitute for steel fencing in the future.

Rewrite this para It will be environment friendly and tribals will get work in their areas. Bamboo is available in abundance in the Northeast.” He said that these enclosures would also be used to prevent cattle from coming on the highways.

Minister said that rural areas would be benefitted by this and farmers would be able to cultivate bamboo on barren land. He said that apart from pickles and clothes, ethanol is also being made from bamboo in Assam. He said, “China has a big bamboo economy and such a bamboo economy will be established in our country as well.”
