Mahindra Electric Automobiles Limited (MEAL), a part of Mahindra & Mahindra, introduced the next exciting phase of its electric venture through the Vision Thar.e concept car. The reveal took place during Mahindra’s Futurescape event held in Cape Town, South Africa. The event also featured the introduction of the global tractor brand OJA and the Scorpio-N based pickup truck.

Speaking about the unveiling event, Veejay Nakra, President of the Automotive Sector at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., expressed, “Vision Thar.e stands as a symbol of innovation and a pioneering design philosophy that is distinctively Mahindra while having a global appeal. Thar.e is designed for those with an adventurous spirit, who seek exploration without compromise. Our emphasis on sustainable materials aligns with the worldwide trend towards responsible consumption, reflecting our commitment to being environmentally positive. This ensures that Thar.e remains both timeless and relevant.”

Regarding the design and development, Pratap Bose, Chief Design Officer at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., commented, “Crafting Vision Thar.e involves embracing a bold and innovative future. Our design carves out a fresh path, showcasing Mahindra’s dedication to cutting-edge creativity and groundbreaking thinking. While preserving Thar’s inherent adventurous spirit and off-road capabilities, we’ve also given it a unique identity in the realm of electric SUVs. This venture goes beyond just creating another off-roader; it presents a vision that represents progress in automotive design, all while staying rooted in our origins. Thar.e signifies our proclamation of an exhilarating and responsible future.”

The Mahindra Thar.e stands out as a distinctive SUV that incorporates modular components, allowing for adaptability and part swapping based on specific needs. This ingenious approach transforms the rugged off-roader into a more road-oriented SUV by exchanging certain components. While retaining a conceptual appearance, the Thar.e boasts features that distinguish it within the Thar SUV family. Notable among these are the squircle-shaped headlights equipped with LED DRLs and a vertically slatted front grille reminiscent of the iconic Thar design.

Built upon the INGLO platform, previously unveiled and now customized as the INGLO P1 for the Thar.e, this SUV presents sharp geometric body panels that serve both a futuristic and off-road-friendly purpose. It showcases significant off-road wheels, concise overhangs, spacious wheel wells, and a unique five-door body configuration, unlike the present-generation Thar. Inside, the cabin’s design embraces a minimalistic yet functional ethos, combining straight lines with practical grab handles, a well-positioned rotatable display, and an organized layout.

Mahindra’s commitment to sustainability is evident in the use of materials like fabrics crafted from 50% recycled PET and repurposed plastics. This commitment aligns with the core of the Vision Thar.e, representing a modern reinterpretation of an iconic SUV. Although the final product remains in development, Mahindra has shared that the Thar.e’s wheelbase will span between 2,775mm and 2,975mm. The vehicle will also offer a ground clearance ranging from 250mm to 300mm, a front overhang varying from 640mm to 680mm, and a rear overhang ranging from 640mm to 740mm.

While specific powertrain details have not been disclosed, the Thar.e will embrace a dual-motor setup featuring two motors of equal capacity. Additional information about the Thar.e will be unveiled as the production-spec car’s launch draws closer.
